Special Projects: The Great Outdoors

Our campus is growing! Through the Annual Fund for Heritage Hall, several special projects are underway to encourage Chargers of all ages to be active and enjoy the great outdoors. Projects like this are made possible by patrons, alumni, and friends of The Hall whose generosity helps us create and maintain a safe and inviting campus environment.

Lower School

As construction of the Mingee Family Gymnasium and all-school storm shelter began in July, the Lower School playground (installed in the early 1990s!) was dismantled and removed to make room for a bigger, safer, and more modern space for young Chargers to play.

The new Lower School playground will extend 120 feet to allow ample space for students to run and play more safely between structures. Surrounded by a new sidewalk, the playground will be securely located closer to the LS building, removing any visibility from NW 122nd Street. The playground will be customized to meet our specifications with the most modern features that keep the safety of our youngest Chargers in mind: artificial turf with fall height protection padding, no wood, screws, nails, or rubber mulch. Completion and installment are projected to take place in late 2024.
Middle School

The recent addition of new concrete behind the Class of 1977 Middle School creates a new space for outdoor recreation during break time and lunch, including 4-square, cornhole, and outdoor ping pong tables. Plans also include a covered outdoor dining area outside the Middle School cafeteria and renovations to the outdoor teacher lounge area.
Campus Garden

An innovative campus garden will be installed near the McClendon Gate, facing NW 115th Street.

Heritage Hall has partnered with Oklahoma State University Extension for guidance and resources through their gardening program. This transformative project is estimated to cost $200,000. Heritage Hall has already received a matching grant of $75,000 from the prestigious E. E. Ford Foundation, who recognizes the benefits to learning for Chargers of all ages. While adults will oversee the gardening program, students will manage the garden daily—planning, planting, tending, harvesting, etc.

Heritage Hall is situated in an underserved community within a veritable food desert. According to university experts, the proposed garden has the potential to yield between 6,000 and 10,000 pounds of produce to donate to those in need. Tending to the garden will transcend textbooks, fostering humility, perspective, and patience. The work will also open students’ eyes to the world beyond the School's gates, which separates them from the community literally and figuratively.

Campus-Wide Outdoor Seating

Campus-wide, additional benches/seating will be installed. Additional seating will also be installed outside the MAC for use during community and athletic events.

At Charger Stadium, the grass play area near “Pop” Murray Field will be extended near the home spectator stands.
